Skater Johnny Weir came out in his new book. This comes as no major surprise, but it is a label he has dodged for years. The figure skater’s new book is called “Welcome to My World,” and it will hit the shelves on Tuesday. Fans will be able to catch him on the opening leg of his book tour in New York on Tuesday as well.
Weir wrote in the book that being gay is just the smallest part of what makes him himself. He wrote,"I'm not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life and accept myself. What's wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become." He is unique, and nobody is like him. It is great to hear that he has such great self confidence. What a good role model he is for everybody – not just those who are struggling with coming out of the closet. It seems most people could benefit from somebody who is happy with who he is.
Johnny Weir has been a target of animal rights groups in the past because his skating costume included real fox fur last year. He didn’t even let that get him down although he was in the headlines a lot over the incident.
Over the years the flamboyant skater avoided being defined by his sexuality even though his masculinity was questioned by broadcasters at the Vancouver Olympics last year. After that, he experienced a huge backlash from the gay community, which made him further want to keep the information to himself. However, he finally decided to answer the question because of the plight that others face. He said, "With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story,"US News Paper
