When asked about the success of craigslist Newmark said: “Somehow we've worked with people in the community to build an online community. We're not certain how it happened, except that we really do listen to people. We try to treat people like we want to be treated, and somehow we built a culture of trust.”

Newmark added: “We progress a little on the slow side, which may mean we lose some opportunity. But we respond to real needs and try to do real well in terms of helping out people, that seems to work. I guess I remember someone saying that markets are conversations, and they were right.”

The idea of markets being conversations and the importance of customer feedback echoes the sentiments of Meredith Artley of the latimes.com and Jim Brady of Washington Post’s website in a recent interview by Editor & Publisher discussing the redesign of their sites.

Newmark also discussed the never-ending development of the site as a part of the success: “We're doing a job, we're doing it well, but there's always more to be done. Maybe that does matter to people, but the focus is on what's next.US NEWS PAPER
