Mrs. Scanlan, a recent high school graduate, won a $50,000 scholarship at the competition at the Planet Hollywood casino-resort Las Vegas.
“She’s cute, I’ll give her that,” said Mr. Trent.
Mrs. Scanlan plans to study American politics at Patrick Henry College in Virginia and attend law school after her reign as Miss America, according to her pageant biography.
