Vail Wesley, who was a world religion teacher at the private Christian Chicago Hope Academy, must register on the Illinois sex offender registry. The former teacher, 24, was accused of having sexual contact with the then 17-year-old male student at her apartment and in her classroom. She pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
The case was given attention when the teenager’s mother said officials at Chicago Hope were trying to force her son out of the school.
She told CBS Chicago that she knew her son could be “mouthy” but was not aware of any serious discipline problems that would lead to his expulsion. They had told her that “He wasn’t welcome back, that I could either take him out in good standing or they would expel him.”
School officials did not comment on the case. The principal of the school, Mike Laneve, told the news, “Chicago Hope Academy doesn’t discuss school affairs in public. We do that for the protection of the children and the families.”
