McDonald's restaurants throughout the Central Coast will celebrate the third annual Herb Peterson Day on Wednesday, Jan. 5, to commemorate the Central Coast resident’s invention of the Egg McMuffin.

On that day, customers can purchase an Egg McMuffin sandwich for $1 at participating restaurants during breakfast hours, limited five sandwiches per customer.

Peterson owned and operated six McDonald's restaurants in Santa Barbara and Goleta. In 1973, he created the Egg McMuffin, modeled after his personal breakfast favorite, eggs benedict.

Within a few years of presenting his idea to McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, the sandwich became the platform for the breakfast business at the restaurants from coast to coast.

Peterson died in 2008, and the first annual Herb Peterson Day took place Jan. 5, 2009, which would have been Peterson’s 90th birthday.US News Paper
